Luxurious Bath Bombs

Baths can be relaxing or energizing depending on the time of day, the temperature of the water, and the essential oils you use. These bath bombs will take an average bath to the next level and make it luxurious! You can choose what essential oils to add depending on your bathing preferences. Lavender, ylang ylang, and Roman chamomile are great options for a relaxing bath. Citrus oils, peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary can help make a bath rejuvenating. You can even try mixing up the relaxing oils and rejuvenating oils if desired.

Luxurious Bath Bombs

  • Servings: Yield=2–5 bath bombs

Ingredients & SUPPLIES:

Instructions:

  • Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl and the wet ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and mix well with a whisk. The mixture will bubble just a bit and begin to clump together. After mixing a little with the whisk, put the whisk aside and work the mixture with your fingers. Mix and blend until it is well combined and has the texture of mildly wet sand. It should clump together when you squeeze it with your fingers. If it is too dry, moisten it with the water in the spray bottle, one spritz at a time. You do not want the mixture too wet or it will not set up properly.
  • Press the mixture firmly into bath bomb molds. Let sit for 1–2 hours.
  • After the bath bombs are dry enough that they stick together, remove from the molds and let sit on a fluffy towel overnight before using. If you live in a humid area, you may need to dry the bath bombs for 2 nights before they’ll be set enough to gift or use.
  • Store dry bath bombs in an airtight container or bag.
  • If you have any leftover mixture, but not enough to make a full bath bomb, you can simply shape it into a ball with your hands and let it dry. It won’t look nearly as great as when using the the bath bomb molds, but it is still usable in a bath.
  • NOTE: If you packed the plastic bath bomb molds really tight or leave the mixture in them too long to dry, it can be a little difficult to get the bath bombs out. However, it is possible if you use pliers to pull the sides apart. You can even use pens or something long and straight to stick in the holes on the tabs and use them as leverage to pull the mold apart. If the bombs are fully dry and you can only get one side off, you can place your fingers under the lip and press your thumbs in the center to pop the bath bomb out or gently push down the exposed bath bomb with the side of the thumb.

Extra Ideas:

  • Try using food coloring (added to the wet ingredients) and dry herbs (added to the molds before pressing in the bath bomb mixture) to decorate the bath bombs.
  • If you want to make different scented bath bombs, you can try making the bath bombs unscented, then add about 5 drops of essential oil to the middle of the bath bomb before pressing the mold together.
  • Try different essential oils for different purposes. For example, try making some relaxing bath bombs with soothing essential oils (e.g., lavender, ylang ylang, or Roman chamomile) or energizing bath bombs with invigorating essential oils (e.g., citrus oils, peppermint, eucalyptus, or rosemary).

Essential Oil Make & Take Class Idea

These bath bombs make a great activity for a make-and-take essential oil class. Give everyone a Plastic Bath Bomb Mold, and double the recipe to make 10 bath bombs. Let your attendees press the mixture into their molds and add their desired essential oil to the bath bomb before pressing both sides together.

Homemade Sunscreen

Protect your skin naturally while out in the summer sun with this all-natural homemade sunscreen. It is easy to make and looks and feels just like store-bought sunscreen! Your family won’t know the difference, but you will feel better knowing what you are putting on your children’s skin! A few things to know about this sunscreen:

  1. This sunscreen has an SPF of 20+ because the zinc oxide has an SPF of 20, the coconut oil has an SPF of 4, and the essential oils used in this recipe are also beneficial for protecting against the sun’s rays.
  2. It may need to be reapplied every hour or so, especially during water play. The beeswax in this recipe does help it be a little waterproof, but stay on the safe side and reapply fairly often.
  3. Even though it looks like it goes on pretty white in the above picture, it doesn’t stay that way. Just rub it on the skin, spreading it all over, and after a minute or so it will melt and disappear.
  4. This sunscreen will last through the summer—possibly even 2 summers depending on how fresh your ingredients are.

Essential Oils for Men

Some men don’t always take the best care of themselves. However, even a busy man can find easy ways to slip healthy habits into his daily routine. Getting a good night’s rest and regular exercise can be a challenge but can be achieved by planning ahead and prioritizing time. Eating well and taking supplements are also important components to a healthy lifestyle. Likewise, replacing men’s body care products with healthier alternatives is rarely a priority, but can be just as important.

Essential oils are a wonderful alternative to harsh chemicals, fillers, and perfumes that are in many of the products men use daily and can be very beneficial to men’s health. Here are a few ways manly men use essential oils in their daily routines:

Body Wash for Men. Try out this body wash when you hop in the shower first thing in the morning or before bed at night! This sudsy body wash contains lemongrass and cedarwood essential oils. It smells great and will leave your skin feeling healthy and moisturized!
Hair Care for Men. Take care of your handsome locks with essential oils! Try adding a little cedarwood, rosemary, or wintergreen (a total of 3 drops) to 1 tsp. (5 ml) of jojoba oil, and massage into your hair and scalp before shampooing to help with dandruff and to stimulate hair growth.

Styling your hair is easy with this DIY hair pomade! It’s thick and holds short hair in place really well!

For those of you who like to grow out your facial hair, try using a beard oil (recipe below) to soften your beard and keep it looking nice.

If you like to keep your face clean shaven, give this shaving cream and aftershave lotion a try!

Deodorant for Men. Smell great all day with this custom-scented soft deodorant or this DIY deodorant stick.

Try one of these essential oil combinations for a manly scent:

  • 5 drops orange + 3 drops juniper berry + 2 drops spikenard
  • 4 drops lime + 4 drops orange + 2 drops clove + 2 drops petitgrain
Oral Care for Men. When you wake up in the morning and grab your toothbrush, try this all-natural tooth powder as an alternative to commercial toothpaste. When you are done, leave your toothbrush in this solution to clean it while you are gone for the day.

If you like to use a mouthwash, try mixing a little coconut oil with 1 drop lemon, orange, or peppermint essential oil, and swish the mixture around your mouth to help freshen your breath. After several minutes, spit the coconut oil into a garbage can. (Do not spit in the sink, or the oil may clog the pipes.)

Breath Solutions for Men. Make sure to keep some essential oil breath mints on hand for when you have to head to a work meeting! Alternatively, this breath spray is easy to keep in your pocket and spritz in your mouth as often as needed throughout the day.
Workout Oils for Men. Maintaining a muscular physique requires effort . . . and a little pain. Just take this sore muscles salve with you when you hit the gym, and apply it to the muscles you worked out that day to keep the pain minimal. If you experience more than the normal soreness, try these essential oils for other sports injuries.
Flavorful Food for Men. Eating healthy is important, but we all want our food to taste good, too! Try enhancing the flavor of your food with essential oils! Try out these savory spice mixes or any of these essential oil–flavored cooking recipes to make your culinary masterpieces come to life.
Hand DegreaserHandyman Tips for Men. Yard work and other house/car maintenance tend to fall on the shoulders of men. Let essential oils make your job a little easier! After working on the car, try cleaning off your greasy hands with this hand degreaser. 

You may be excited to mow the lawn again next Saturday if you use these frozen eucalyptus mint towels to stay cool! Freeze the towels rolled up in a shape to conform to your neck. Then secure one around your neck with a bandana so it stays put as you as you mow the lawn or do yard work.

Diffuser Blends for Men. Even manly men diffuse essential oils! Try one of these blends in your diffuser next time you chill in your man cave (or office).

Beard Oil for Men. Soft beards result in more hugs and kisses from women and children. Try this beard oil to make your beard feel soft, smell good, and benefit from the essential oils! This balm is best used after a shower when you’ve washed your beard.

Homemade Soft Deodorant

Making your own deodorant can be a great way to control what ingredients go on your skin and allows you to create your own customized scent! Check out the ingredient substitutions to see how this deodorant can also be made to work with sensitive skin. This soft deodorant is specially formulated with the following ingredients:

Shea Butter: This makes a soft, smooth deodorant and helps reduce the chance of skin irritation. Note: Shea butter contains latex (a natural rubber). If you have an allergy to latex, this ingredient can be substituted in equal proportions with Mango Butter.
Arrowroot Powder: This helps absorb moisture (i.e., sweat).
Baking Soda: Along with raising the pH of the deodorant, baking soda absorbs bad odors, which reduces the stink. Some people are sensitive to baking soda, and it can cause skin irritation. Note: It is common for skin irritation to occur during the first few days (known as the detox period) if you are transitioning from commercial deodorant. If you continue to experience skin irritation, it may be due to the baking soda in the recipe. If you have sensitive skin, try using food-grade diatomaceous earth instead of the baking soda in the recipe.
Coconut Oil: This ingredient is known for killing bad bacteria and for its soothing and moisturizing properties. Many say that after using a coconut oil deodorant, their armpits are smoother and the hairs softer.
Probiotics: Adding some good bacteria to your deodorant can help balance out the bad bacteria that leads to bad odors. This is optional, but it can help increase the effectiveness of the deodorant. Choose a shelf-stable probiotic for the best benefits.
Essential Oils: These not only give your deodorant a pleasant scent but can also help fight bad bacteria, affect your mood, or benefit a variety of other ailments depending on the oils you use.Here are a few essential oil suggestions for deodorant from Modern Essentials:
Single Essential Oils: melaleuca, lavender, geranium, eucalyptus, cedarwood, cypress, spikenard
Essential Oil Combinations:
5 drops lavender + 5 drops melaleuca

DIY Hair Pomade

This hair pomade works great for styling short hair! It is made from beeswax, shea butter or cocoa butter, and jojoba oil (which is technically a wax), so it’s thick enough to hold hair effectively. Though this product has been formulated to use on hair as a pomade, it is extremely versatile and could also be used as an eyebrow smoother, lotion or hand cream, and even lip balm.

Here are a few essential oil suggestions for hair care from Modern Essentials:
Normal Hair: Roman chamomile, lavender, clary sage, thyme, rosemary, cedarwood, lemon, cypress.
Dry Hair: geranium, sandalwood, lavender, rosemary, wintergreen.
Fragile Hair: clary sage, lavender, thyme, sandalwood, wintergreen, Roman chamomile.
Greasy/Oily Hair: basil, cypress, thyme, lemon, rosemary, petitgrain, peppermint.
Hair Growth: thyme, lavender, rosemary, ylang ylang, cedarwood, clary sage, ginger, lemon, grapefruit.
Hair Loss: rosemary, lavender, thyme, ylang ylang, cedarwood, wintergreen, lemon, clary sage, cypress, Roman chamomile.
Dandruff: lavender, wintergreen, cypress, rosemary, cedarwood, thyme.

Because this pomade is versatile enough to be used as lip balm or lotion as well, here are some of the essential oil recommendations for that purpose:
Hand Care: geranium, lemon, lemongrass, sandalwood, rosemary, eucalyptus.
Skin Care: helichrysum, juniper berry, Roman chamomile, thyme, geranium, arborvitae, melaleuca, lavender, patchouli, sandalwood, lemon, bergamot, rosemary.
Lip Care: lavender, melaleuca, lemon, geranium.

If you want to use this pomade for hair, skin, and lips, it is possible to use a combination that works for all.

Try any of these essential oil combinations in your hair pomade:

  • 3 drops lime + 2 drops peppermint + 2 drops rosemary + 1 drop lavender (This is the one we used, and it smells great!)
  • 6 drops grapefruit + 2 drops rosemary
  • 5 drops lime (can lighten light hair)
  • 4 drops Roman chamomile + 3 drops ylang ylang
  • 2 drops lemon + 2 drops rosemary + 2 drops cedarwood + 2 drops peppermint
  • 3 drops clary sage + 2 drops ylang ylang + 3 drops lavender + 2 drops rosemary
  • 3 drops rosemary + 3 drops geranium + 3 drops lavender
  • 4 drops lavender + 4 drops clary sage
  • 4 drops clary sage + 3 drops rosemary
  • 4 drops lavender + 4 drops cedarwood
  • 6 drops Roman chamomile + 2 drops lemon (can lighten light hair)
  • 3 drops bergamot + 3 drops cypress + 3 drops lavender
  • 4 drops rosemary + 3 drops eucalyptus or melaleuca (helps with dandruff)
  • 4 drops lavender + 3 drops geranium (a good all-purpose combination)

Antiwrinkle Cream for a Smoother Complexion

Your face does a lot of work during the day and could use a little love at night. Try caring for your complexion with an all-natural, antiwrinkle cream! This cream is formulated to benefit a mature face with wrinkles, but it can help any skin look younger longer.

Though an optional ingredient, bentonite clay is important for its ability to absorb and remove toxins, heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals. It can do all this because it carries a strong negative charge that bonds to the positive charge in these damaging substances. As bentonite clays draws toxins, it releases minerals for the skin to absorb. Bentonite clay also pulls excess hydrogen from skin cells, allowing them to admit oxygen. Bentonite clay can be found at your local health food store or online. If you do use bentonite clay, be careful to not let it touch anything metallic, or it will lose its effectiveness.

Simply Luxurious Moisturizing Lotion

So many of us use lotion every day, but many of the commercially available lotions contain ingredients that could actually be harmful to our bodies when used daily. Skin is very porous and absorbs just about everything put on it, so it’s best to use lotion made of natural ingredients. And the best way to know what is in your lotion is to make it yourself!

This lotion recipe is really simple to make. First, melt your hard oils (cocoa butter, beeswax, and coconut oil). Then add your soft or liquid oils (sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, and jojoba oil). Finally, blend together the water and oils until the mixture emulsifies. You’ll hear and feel a change, but keep blending to prevent the water and oil from separating later. Watch the video at the end of this post to see how simple this lotion is to make!

The best part about making your own lotion is that you get to customize the scent! Essential oils make that really easy. You can simply add your favorite essential oil or blend, or you can add oils that help with specific health issues. Whatever you choose to create, this lotion makes a great base because it is simple to make, absorbs easily, moisturizes well, and feels so luxurious!

Moisturizing Lotion

  • Servings: Yield=8 oz. (240 ml)
  • Difficulty: Moderate

Ingredients & Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. In a double boiler, melt cocoa butter and beeswax pellets over low heat. Once melted, add the coconut oil, and continue heating until almost melted. Remove from heat, and stir until everything finishes melting.
  2. Stir in the sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, and jojoba oil.
  3. Heat distilled water until warm.
  4. Using a hand mixer, start beating water, and slowly add the oil mixture while continuing to beat. Keep beating for a few minutes. As you blend, you will hear a change and feel the lotion thicken. Let stand for a few minutes. If lotion separates during this time, continue to blend it again for a couple more minutes. If it doesn’t separate, then it has emulsified properly.
  5. Mix in the essential oil.
  6. Pour lotion into a plastic zip-top bag. Snip off a corner of the bag, and squeeze the lotion into your container of choice.
  7. To use, pump a little into your hand, and massage into the skin as needed.

Essential Oil Spotlight: Cinnamon

Cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is steam-distilled from the bark of the tree. It contains antibacterial, antidepressant, antifungal, anti-infectious (intestinal, urinary), anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antiseptic, antispasmodic (light), antiviral, astringent, immune-stimulant, purifying, sexual-stimulant, and warming properties. It also enhances the action and activity of other oils.

Cinnamon essential oil is commonly used for airborne bacteria, bacterial infections, bites/stings, breathing, diabetes, diverticulitis, fungal infections, immune system (stimulates), infection, libido (low), mold, pancreas support, physical fatigue, pneumonia, typhoid, vaginal infection, vaginitis, viral infections, and warming the body.

Historically, this most ancient of spices was included in just about every prescription issued in ancient China. It was regarded as a tranquilizer, tonic, and stomachic and as being good for depression and a weak heart.

This oil may be beneficial for circulation, colds, coughs, digestion, exhaustion, flu, infections, rheumatism, and warts. Cinnamon oil fights viral and infectious diseases, and testing has yet to find a virus, bacteria, or fungus that can survive in its presence.

Applications of Cinnamon Essential Oil and Safety Data

Cinnamon essential oil is one of the strongest essential oils, and care should be taken when using it.
Topical Application: Before applying cinnamon oil topically, make sure to dilute it 1:3 (1 drop essential oil to at least 3 drops carrier oil). Please note that repeated use of cinnamon essential oil can result in extreme contact sensitization, so make sure to dilute well, avoid when pregnant, and frequently give your body a break in between uses.
Aromatic Application: When diffusing cinnamon essential oil, be careful to not inhale directly from the diffuser, as it may irritate the nasal membranes.
Internal Application: Cinnamon essential oil can be used in cooking, but make sure to start with only a toothpick and add more if needed.

5 Ways To Use Cinnamon Essential Oil

2. Use in a Romantic Massage Oil
Because cinnamon essential oil is known to be an aphrodisiac and is a warming oil, it makes a great addition to a romantic massage oil. Here is a great recipe to help you and your spouse enjoy an intimate massage together:

Romantic Massage Oil:
5 drops ylang ylang
1 drop cinnamon
1 Tbsp. (15 ml) carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, or Jojoba Oil.

3. Add to a Breath-Freshening Spray
Try adding 2–3 drops each of cinnamon and orange essential oil to this Essential Oil Breath Spray recipe.

4. Add to Cooking Recipes
Cinnamon essential oil is great to add to any of your favorite recipes. We had a difficult time picking from our recipes that use cinnamon essential oil, but here are some of our favorites:

5. Protect Your Plants with This Gardening Spray
Keep birds and bugs from eating your plants with this garden spray.

Protective Gardening Spray

  • Servings: Yield=1 gallon (about 4 liters)
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. To a small glass bowl, add the emulsifier, essential oils, and dish soap in order; gently stir after adding each ingredient. Pour a little (up to 1 cup or 250 ml) water into the bowl, and stir to combine.
  2. Pour mixture into a gallon-sized (4-liter) water jug (mostly full of water). Place the cap on, and carefully shake to combine. Pour mixture into your 16 oz. glass spray bottles.
  3. To use, spray the tops and bottoms of the plant leaves. It is best to spray on a cloudy day or in the evening so the sun and cinnamon essential oil combination doesn’t burn the plants. Apply every couple weeks or as needed. Wait 2–3 days after spraying to harvest any food.
