Must-Have Essential Oils for Traveling:

1. Soothing Blend
Traveling usually involves cramped spaces for long periods of time or more strenuous activity than our bodies are used to. For this reason, the Soothing Blend is an important asset to your travel kit. By having it with you, you can easily apply it to sore muscles, cramps, sore feet, and so on. There’s no need to be in pain when you can find relief.
2. Peppermint
Traveling can be hard on our bodies, and that’s why you need peppermint oil. Peppermint essential oil may assist with digestive troubles, motion sickness, and headaches. You should never leave home without this versatile essential oil.
3. Lavender
If you experience difficulty with adjusting to new time zones, or sleeping in a new bed, this oil is a must for all your travels. Lavender essential oil is not only great for relaxation, but it can also soothe sunburns, bug bites, and allergies.
4. Protective Blend
Since it’s impossible to control sanitary conditions while away from home, bringing this essential oil with you on your travels is super important. You can build your immune system with this blend prior to traveling and continue to use it throughout your trip. This blend is great for fighting colds, sore throats, the flu, and infections.

Essential Oil Travel Tips:

1. Fighting Jet Lag
There’s nothing worse than starting off your travels on the wrong foot. When traveling, we want to be our best self, and that means being awake and alert. To avoid jet lag, the most important thing you can do is stay very well hydrated, but avoid alcohol and caffeine while flying. Next, it’s important to set your internal clock to the location you will be traveling to at the beginning of your flight. That means sleep when it’s night there, and stay awake when it’s day. You can take small naps—no more than 45 minutes—in order to keep your body refreshed. If you arrive in the daytime, you should keep your body active until a reasonable time to retire to bed. Now that you know some general tips, let’s get down to the essential oils.

Use invigorating essential oils such as peppermint and eucalyptus in the morning and calming essential oils such as lavender and geranium at night. Consider making a sleep blend in a small spray bottle to mist on your pillow when you are having trouble sleeping. You can also add lemon, peppermint, or orange essential oils to your water as an energy and immune booster. You can learn more about using essential oils for jet lag in Modern Essentials™: The Complete Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils.

2. Packing Your Oils
If your travel plans include airplanes, you may want to take special care of your oils. If you’re taking your oils in your carry-on luggage, remember that TSA regulations require all liquids to be under 3.4 oz. (100 ml), and placed in a clear plastic zip-top bag or vanity bag, when carried through security. And you can only have 1 quart-sized plastic bag of liquids. This means you can only take the oils that you absolutely need, so you will need to consider what oils are most important to you while traveling. Keep in mind that the x-ray scanners in airport security will not damage your oils.
If you would like to avoid this potential hassle, you may alternatively pack your oils into your checked bag. We suggest that you still place your oils in a plastic bag in case of leaking caused by pressure changes, and remember to secure the lids tightly. Peppermint Chocolate Bites

We all love the dinner mints given out at fancy restaurants, but they only give you one! We decided to try our hand at chocolatiering, and we fell in love with this simple recipe. You can use your favorite dark chocolate (the darker the healthier), and the peppermint essential oil adds a nice flavor that will make it hard to stop eating these little gems.

Chocolate Peppermint Bites

  • Servings: 36–48
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Print

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages (10 oz. each) dark chocolate melting wafers
  • 1 package (10 oz.) white chocolate melting wafers
  • 6–8 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops green food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°F (95°C).
  2. Place the chocolate into 3 oven-safe bowls (1 package in each bowl), and warm in the oven for 20 minutes or until fully melted.
  3. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper, making sure it covers the sides as well.
  4. Remove one of the bowls of dark chocolate from the oven, and leave the others in to keep them melted.
  5. Pour the first bowl of dark chocolate across the wax paper, spread the chocolate out with a spatula, and shake the pan to help create an even layer.
  6. While that layer is drying, remove the white chocolate from the oven, and add peppermint oil and food coloring.
  7. Wait just until the first layer of chocolate changes from glossy to matte, then pour the white chocolate on top quickly, spreading it out and shaking the pan to flatten.
  8. Once that layer has turned matte, remove the last bowl of dark chocolate from the oven, and spread it across the top in the same manner as the other 2 layers.
  9. Allow the chocolate to dry, then cut into squares with a sharp knife.

The trick to this recipe is knowing exactly when to pour the layers on top. If the chocolate is too wet, the layers will mix. If the chocolate is too dry, the layers won’t stick together. Watch the chocolate as it dries; it will change from glossy to matte, and at this point, you can quickly top the next layer. If they do mix a bit, no big deal! It will still taste delicious!

These chocolate bites are so good, you won’t be able to keep the kids away! They also make great snacks for your essential oil classes. Make up a tray, and give them to your attendees to demonstrate the use of essential oils in cooking.

Keep Spring Allergies under Control with Essential Oils

Despite the excitement we feel for the approaching spring, there’s a little thing that tends to get in the way: allergies. Nobody likes sneezing, itchy eyes, or a scratchy throat, especially when we want to be outside enjoying the greenery and flowers blooming around us. Although spring allergies may not affect you, chances are they affect someone you know, and that’s no fun to be around. Incredibly, some of the essential oils that best aid allergies are also some of our favorites. Lemon, lavender, and peppermint have incredible properties that will help you with all your allergy symptoms. It’s time for you to start smelling the roses—comfortably!

For a simple allergy remedy, take 2 drops of each lemon, lavender, and peppermint in a capsule twice a day, or as symptoms arise.

Diffuser blends are a great way to relieve allergies. The aroma of essential oils quickly penetrates the blood-brain barrier and enters the bloodstream through your lungs. If you have any of the following symptoms, just diffuse these blends, and you’ll be feeling better in no time.

Itchy Eyes & Throat
2 drops lemon
2 drops lavender
2 drops peppermint
Scratchy Throat
2 drops lavender
2 drops Roman chamomile
2 drops cedarwood
2 drops melaleuca
Watery Eyes
1 drop lemon
1 drop lime
1 drop rosemary
1 drop eucalyptus
1 drop peppermint

If you’re looking for a topical application method, try combining 20 drops lavender, 15 drops lemon, and 10 drops peppermint in a 10 ml roll-on bottle, and fill the remainder with fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil of your choice. Roll this blend onto the back of your neck and ears whenever you feel allergy symptoms coming on.

Now you can officially enjoy the spring and all that it brings without the sneezing and itchy, swollen eyes! You can read more about essential oils and seasonal allergies in Modern Essentials: The Complete Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils, 9th Edition, pp. 220–21.

Essential Oil Saltwater Mouthwash

Saltwater makes a great mouthwash because the it alkalizes the mouth, creating an environment that stops the growth of bacteria. Additionally, saltwater is astringent and speeds wound healing by reducing inflammation and contracting the tissues. We included essential oils in our saltwater mouthwash because their antibacterial properties kill the existing bacteria and help freshen the breath.

Some good oils to use in a mouthwash include peppermint, melaleuca, orange, cinnamon, clove, lemon, myrrh, or an antibacterial blend. Try using a single oil or mixing a couple to create your own custom blend! Though you don’t often see myrrh used in mouthwash, myrrh essential oil is actually a great oil to use in oral care because it is said to help with sore throats, mouth ulcers, gingivitis, gum disease, and wounds.

This mouthwash is great to use on a daily basis or even just when your mouth needs a little help healing from mouth wounds or conditions.

Saltwater Mouthwash

  • Servings: Yield=1 cup (240 ml)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

Ingredients & Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Stir salt into the warm water until dissolved. Let cool.
  2. Pour essential oils and essential oil emulsifier into the 8 oz. glass bottle. When the saltwater is cool, add it to the bottle, screw the lid on, and shake to combine.
  3. To use, shake first, pour a little into a shot glass (about 1/2 a shot glass), and then pour the liquid into your mouth. Swish and gargle for 30 seconds. Swallow or spit as desired.

Extra Idea:

  • Place a little of the mixture into a shot glass, and soak your floss or flosser before using it to floss your teeth for help in cleaning the hard-to-access areas.
