There are numerous ways you can use this app to find the information you need. From the home screen, you can look up a condition or an oil by either using the search bar at the top or by tapping on the figure to the left. Just tap the figure in the area you are wanting information for, and scroll through the menu that pops up to find the appropriate condition. The “Search” button on the bottom of the screen will bring you back to this page.

If you click on the “Conditions” button on the bottom of the screen, you will be taken to the conditions page. This represents highlights from the Personal Usage Guide section of the book Modern Essentials and contains the primary (red) and secondary (orange) recommendations. Scroll through the conditions by spinning the thermometer at the top of the screen. You can easily hide or view the thermometer by tapping the blue bar at the top.

By clicking on the “Oils” button on the bottom navigation bar, you will be able to look up information about a particular single oil. This section represents highlights from the Single Oils section of the book Modern Essentials. Spin the oil bottle at the top of the screen to look up a different oil. You can easily hide or view the oil bottle by tapping the blue bar at the top of the screen.

The “Usage” button will take you to a series of pages providing basic information about the topical, aromatic, and internal applications of essential oils. This section contains some information provided in the Science & Application section of the Modern Essentials book. Under the Topical section is information on Massage, Direct Application, Reflex Therapy, and Auricular Therapy. The Reflex Therapy page and Auricular Therapy page contain their respective charts.

Under the Aromatic section is information about Diffusion, Direct Inhalation, and All-Day Aromatherapy. Many of these information pages in the Usage section contain pictures or videos to demonstrate the topic. The Internal section includes information on Oral Application, Vaginal or Rectal Application, and Cooking. Included on the Cooking page is a recipe for Luscious Lemon Bars!

    • Hi Tiffany,

We’ve built a completely new app that is now available in the Google Play store and should soon be available in the App Store. It includes the new oils along with new functionality and additional content. It’s called Modern Essentials® Plus and you can find it for Android here.

        • Hi Mary,

Because of significant changes we made to the app and changes made by the app stores we were only able to release this as a new product rather than as an update to the existing app. Also, because of the way the app stores work, there is no way for us to tie this back into the previous app so it is necessary to purchase again.

  1. I bought some oils as a gift and would like to purchase the app for her to download on to her iphone. Can I do that from my phone and then send her the purchased app?

    • Hi Raina! To send the app as a gift simply open the app in the App Store click the button with three dots at the top of the screen and select “Gift App” from the available options and complete the required information.

    • There should be a update for the 8th Edition of Modern Essentials (2016). Unfortunately, we don’t currently have any news on the 9th Edition update of the app.

    • Unfortunately, that is not something we can help with. You will need to contact the app store you purchased the app from (the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store).

  2. I noticed that we can modify the name of the blend on the app. I figured that out (hold down the name on the main menu), but after I modify the name and press enter, it disappears by the time I go back to the menu again. What am I doing wrong?

  3. Hi,
I purchased the app for my iPad and love it! I would like to download it on my android phone as well. Can I download my original purchase to two devices or do I need to purchase it a 2nd time? Thanks.

    • Because Android and Apple use different operating systems, you will need to purchase the app that correlates to each operating system. So, because the app you purchased for your iPad uses a different operating system than your android phone, you will need to purchase the app (again) for your android device. If you had an iPhone and used the same Apple ID for both the iPad and iPhone, you could just download the original app purchase on both since they use the same operating system.

  4. I purchased this app last month and have received another charge for the same amount on our cell phone bill. Please advise. I thought the app was a one-time charge not a recurring.

    • The Modern Essentials App is sold through the Apple app store or the Google Play Store, not through AromaTools. The app is a one-time purchasing fee and you shouldn’t be charged multiple times. If you believe you were charged twice for this app, I would suggest you contact the party you purchased the app from (Apple App Store or Google Play Store) or your cell phone carrier to see what the second charge is for and if you have been double charged then Apple or Google will need to refund you for the extra amount.

    • The Modern Essentials App is not currently available on a Windows phone and we do not have a date for when it will be. I will pass your request along to our app developers though!

  5. Can you purchase the book as an e-book? Not the app but the hardcover book that you can download onto an iPad, kindle, kobo or something.

  6. When will you have an e-book from Amazon that we can use? It would be great to have an electronic version of Modern Essentials that I can pull up using my Kindle so help people.

    • We are working on getting the app on Amazon for purchase and use on the kindle within a couple days. You can actually download the Modern Essentials app for Android devices if you first download the Google Play Store app on your kindle, then purchase the Modern Essentials app through the Google Play Store.

  7. Is there a way to add what the blend oils contain so people can know the doterra oil it refers to, plus adding the blends to the list of oils they can look up. Is there anyway to add the other doTERRA products to the mix. It just seems we are missing out on so much with the app compared to the book. 🙁 I really want to be able to send all my new people to the app, but can’t yet.

    • An update will be coming very soon that includes the blends. If you have already purchased the app, just be sure to download the update when it becomes available.

  8. If I change my phone from an android to an iPhone in the near future, do I have to repurchase the app again?

  9. Ok, now that I downloaded it……the info can not be “shared.” Is this feature at the top of your list to create? I sure hope so. Now I am glad I have A-Z Guide App….it is textable to others.

  10. FYI, I purchased the A-Z Guide App for $9.99 per year and doesn’t have anywhere near the info the ME app has. I am excited to download! Thanks for creating it.

  11. Thank you for all the useful information provided on this site. Excited for the update to include the blends, glad to know it is FDA regs that have required you to remove blend names from your publications….that one had been a puzzler…now it makes sense….I have my Davis’ Drug Guide for nurses as an app and use it constantly so this will be awesome to have a quick link for oils reference instead of always calling up (Love that well researched website too). Y’all are awesome….Keep up the great work.

  12. Just purchased the New App ! I must say that I love it. Effortless to download & use. It’s a great tool to have no matter where you go. Knowledge at my fingertips . Well worth it !

  13. Im excited about the app but I would like to hold out on the purchase as I am new to the essential oil scene and most reviews that have been posted seem to intimate that the app update would be very helpful to new oil users.

Do you have a rough estimate when the app update will be available? Thanks

    • The update on the app will be available sometime this month. You can purchase the app anytime and will receive any future updates free of charge. So whether you purchase it now or later, you will be paying the same price and will not miss out on an update.

    • The blend oils have been given a generic name in the app. In order to comply with FDA regulations, we have chosen to remove all trademarked names from our apps and publications.

  14. Is there any way you can add to the app. a business portion where you can enter a contact name/info & notes of what they need etc.? Looking for something that incorporates the business side of things. I found an app. but it is for another oil company so that doesn’t help me 🙂

  15. I would like the option to share text or emails about specific oils and their usage instructions from the app. Sometimes you can’t be face to face, or when you are out and about and you sample someone, it’s a great way to get their contact info and be able to follow up with them.

    • Tonia, the app does not contain all the information in the Modern Essentials. The Modern Essentials has 6 sections: Science and Application, Single Oils, Oil Blends, Wellness Supplements, Essential Living and Spa Products, and the Usage Guide. Out of these sections, the app has a condensed part of the application section, the full single oils section, and most of the usage guide section (it only lists the red and orange—primary and secondary—recommendations). We are hoping to include a oil blends section in a future update. The app is designed to accompany the book as a quick on-the-go reference, but we still recommend having the book at home to reference the rest of the information.

      • The blends are VERY important to me as well! thank you!!! I love the app! Also, any chance of putting some dilution info there- ( I tend to have a hard time knowing how many drops EO:FCO for rollers!) Or maybe every roller is the 1:10 ratio? I don’t know! Lol. Maybe a section saying Use 1:10 for rollers, 2:5 (of Pest blend:water) for bug spray, add 2:10 for gel base, I dunno? These are the things I struggle w most, the ratios… BUT I love the app! VERY WELL DONE (as long as blends are added- I LOVE my blends!!!) THANKYOU !!!!

      • I would be interested in seeing dilution info as well. Even if it is only included in the Common Applications section as “Dilute to a 3:1 ratio and apply to reflex points…” Don’t some oils require more dilution than others?

  16. Does the new ME app require internet to use it?? I would like to download this info but don’t always have internet when meeting with persons I’m helping.

  17. $6.99 is awfully expensive for an app! and I keep getting error messages when trying to purchase. never had that happen with anything else.

    • We felt like that price was reasonable in comparison to the amount of information this app contains. The app is being sold directly from the iTunes and Google Play stores, so I can’t help you with errors at checkout.
